Process

First Step

The absolute first step is for you to contact me and set up 55 min consultation. Then we start with an assessment of your High school courses and grades, standardized test scores (if you have taken any), extracurricular activities, current courses, and future classes. The goal is to make sure that we create a very clear and comprehensive profile for maximum consideration.

Creating a Time-line

Depending on when you contact me, I work with you to create a time-line that incorporates the Standardized tests, AP’s (if applicable), internships, essay writing, and creating a persona that sets you apart. The stress around the college admission process is much better managed if you are working with a very clear process and goals.

Developing a College List

This process is very simple. We work together to create a preliminary list based on some broad criteria that involve location, academic interests, and scores. Then I share very clear guidelines on how to whittle away through each college on that list. Based on this process, we narrow the list down to colleges and academic programs that represent the best match between your interests/credentials, the courses, and the institution’s admissions standards. Then we go through the process of assessing your chances of admission in all of these selected colleges.

Applications. Early Decision or not?

After a list of suitable “target” colleges is ready, I will assist you in coordinating and completing all your applications by going through every step, providing clear guidance on each aspect of the application. No application is sent without my going over it with a fine-tooth comb for omissions, unanswered questions, inconsistencies that may negatively impact your prospects.

If you are very committed to a certain college, then it makes sense to apply for an ED. It is advisable however to visit the ED college before you commit to this binding decision, because once admitted, there is no going back.

Essays/Personal Statement/Recommendations

The college personal statement and essays are the one piece that tells the admission counselors who “you” really are, and sets you apart from the others with similar credentials. Some consider this process intimidating; however, if handled correctly, it can actually be a wonderful way to paint a clear portrait of your personality and character for the college admission team.

To start, you and I will brainstorm essay topics that reflect your best attributes and your passion. Then I work with you in developing essay content, creating a structure, and making sure that the message is strong, clear, and succinct. I might even make you scrap a whole essay and begin anew if it is not coming across right. Finally, I will review your essays for clarity of expression and grammar and offer any last edits. There is no time limit on helping you create the best Personal Statement and Supplement essays.

The same goes for creating a smart, concise, and clear resume that shows the admission counselors your achievements outside the classroom.

Letters of Recommendation

During your school years, you always know the teachers/advisors you have connected with, and who know you on a personal level. I will advise you on how to request these teachers to write some illuminating letters of recommendation where they share your strengths and personality.

Campus Visit

All colleges have a ‘vibe’, and there are definite benefits to visiting the college that you are thinking of applying to. They say that colleges like you to visit, however, it is perfectly all right if you cannot. There are three schools of thought on this:

 1) You visit the schools prior to applying, and essentially apply to the schools that appealed to you.

2) You apply to the schools that meet your criteria on paper (without a visit), and then visit the top 3 (more or less) colleges where you get admission.

3) Visiting all these colleges can be a financial drain, so if you cannot visit,  it is advisable to do a very in-depth research on the top choices, so you can make an informed decision.

College Interview

If you are invited to have a college interview, it is a wonderful opportunity for you to share your thoughts and ideas with the interviewer.  As such, I will provide extensive coaching on interview etiquette, how to prepare, what questions to expect, and what questions to ask.

Scholarship and Financial Aid

Scholarships and other financial aid for college are not limited to students with financial need. There is never any harm in applying for scholarships or merit (non-need-based) aid. This is an area that you and your family will work on together with some support from me.

College choice

After receiving your admission offers, we all meet to review the costs and benefits of attending each college where you have admission. We will discuss and evaluate the college location, the academic choices and majors, and financial aid (if any is granted) of your prospective colleges. The final decision rests on the student and family.

And After

My role in your life does not end after you have been admitted. I am there for you and the family if you need any guidance regarding your move, dorm choice, and any other transitional needs. The change from home to living alone can be hard, so always feel free to reach out for advice and support.
